Jack planes were one of the workhorses of the hand planes. This
is one of the most common secondhand planes you will find on the
market, probably second to only the number 4 smoothing plane.
The jack plane is longer than a number 4 smoothing plane and
shorter than a fore plane. Jack planes are commonly known as a
number 5 or number 5 1/2 with the 5 1/2 plane being the wider of
the two.
There were many old jack plane makers, the most common were the
Record 05 jack plane and Stanley 5 jack plane whose lineage in
some form continues today.
