Home > What Is This Tool?

A chisel plane is a woodworking plane with a low-angle blade set with the cutting edge at the very front of the plane, effectively combining a chisel and a plane.

A chisel plane is also referred to as a 'Trimming Plane' or an 'Edge Plane'.

A chisel plane specialises in being able to reach / plane right into a corner, particularly useful in the final trimming of a rebate / rabbet, trimming proud dovetails and dowels, planing into the corner of a drawer, box or cabinet. The chisel plane can also be useful for removing glue / paint from awkward places.

A chisel plane isn't the most common of planes, probably the most widely produced chisel plane was the Record 077A Bullnose Plane which turned into a chisel plane by removing the front nose piece.

Stanley produced the Stanley 97 Plane which was called a Cabinet Makers Edge Plane; another name for a chisel plane.

Sometimes secondhand Stanley 78 and Record 078 planes can be seen where they have been adapted into a chisel plane, this is often where the plane has been dropped and broken, the user has then seized the opportunity to make use of the plane as a chisel plane.

Today Veritas make a chisel plane similar to the Stanley 97 Plane, Veritas call their plane the Veritas Cabinet Maker's Trimming Plane.
