Extra Info: What is a Bullnose Plane? Bullnose Plane Videos
Manufacturer: Record
Plane Type: Bullnose, Rabbet / Rebate
Model No: 077A
The Record 077A bull-nose plane is a 4" (10.2cm) adjustable, two
function bull-nose rebate plane. The plane can be used as a bullnose
rebate plane and as a chisel plane.
The plane is made from cast iron and finished with a nickel plating.
The body has a removable front nose piece which when removed converts
the plane function to a chisel plane. The front nose piece is secured/removed
using a screw.
The front nose has two packing pieces / shims which allow the mouth
size to be adjusted by placing 0, 1 or 2 pieces in between the front
nose piece and the plane body.
The plane can be used left or right handed and can be laid perfectly flat and
used on either of its sides to trim rebates, shoulder lines and tenons.
The plane has curved areas on top of the plane offering added comfort and control.
The Record 077A bull-nose plane is equipped with a blade adjusting mechanism.
The blade adjuster control is located at the rear of the plane in the form of
a knurled nut. The adjuster is used to control the depth at which the blade will
cut.
The plane is fitted with a shouldered tungsten steel 077A plane blade. The cutting
edge is 1 1/8" (2.9cm) wide with a bevel edge. The top of the blade has a slot
to allow the blade adjuster to locate with the blade. The blade sits in the plane
with the bevel edge side facing upwards.
The blade is held firmly in place with the use of the securing cap / lever cap.
The cap locks the blade in place by locating the securing cap into the two notches
in the plane body and then turning until tight the knurled securing wheel located
on the underside of the securing cap.
The Record 077A plane was presented in a variety of presentation boxes during
its long production period of over 60 years. The first box was a varnished Record
wooden box with a sliding lid, followed by a variety of cardboard boxes. The
first cardboard box was a dark blue colour and then they got lighter from there.
It is fairly common to find the plane with partial nickel plating cover
or even no plating cover as it is prone to coming off through years
of use.
The Record 077A was based upon the
Edward Preston 2509 bullnose plane;
the Preston 2509 model was produced up until the early 1930's when Edward Preston
was taken over by Record.
For the first ten years of Record 077A manufacture from 1933-1943, there was an almost identical
Record bullnose plane made but with a fixed front nose, the model number for the
fixed nose version is the
Record No. 077.
The highly successful Record 077A went on to be manufactured for decades, finally ceasing production in the 1990's.
Then after a bit of gap came the Clifton 770 bullnose plane;
A very similar version of the fixed nose version of the Record 077 bullnose plane
went on to be produced in the early 2000's and at the time of writing this it is
still being made.

Things that are worth checking for when buying an old secondhand Record 077A plane
are:
is there much life left in the plane blade, is there any heavy pitting on the smooth
side of the blades cutting edge area, is there any cast damage/welding and are there
any chips/damage to the plane mouth.
Another thing to be aware of when buying a secondhand Record 077A plane is that
the packing pieces/shims may be missing; this doesn't stop the plane from being
used but it does prevent the mouth from being adjusted.
If a replacement front piece is needed, it should be noted there can be some slight
variations in size of the front nose pieces.
