Extra Info: What is a Fillister Plane? Fillister Plane Videos
Manufacturer: Stanley
Plane Type: Fillister Rebate / Rabbet
Model No: 289
The Stanley 289 plane is a fillister and rabbet plane with a skewed
mouth.
This plane was advertised as the 'Stanley Skew Cutter Fillister and Rebate
Plane' or the 'Stanley Skew Cutter Fillister and Rabbet Plane' depending
on where in the world it was sold.
The Stanley 289 is made from cast iron, with an 8 1/2 inch long body
and a wide 46mm (1 3/4 inch) skewed cutter.
The skewed cutter gives a superb fine cut both with and against the
grain.
The blade is secured in place with the use of a small skewed lever cap which
is controlled with the use of a steel knurled nut.
The plane was originally supplied with
two spurs,
and a fence.
The fence can be placed
on either side of the plane allowing the plane to be used left or right
handed.
The fence slides under the plane allowing the correct width of cut to be
achieved.
The 89 was also equipped with a
depth stop
which could also be positioned on either side of the plane.
The plane is finished in a black jappaning.
The plane has a look which is similar to the
Stanley 78 rabbet and fillister plane.
The look of the 289 looks pretty impressive with the mixture of the black japanned
parts and the exposed steel lines.
The Stanley 289 was supplied in a Stanley cardboard box with a green label on the
outside detailing the planes core details.
The cast of the 289 can be marked with the pattern markings 'Pat's.6-7.&.8-23-10'.
