What Is A Fence? What Is A Guide?

plane fence
Home > Tool Dictionary / Tool Terminology

A fence or guide is used to set a tool to a required distance from a certain point of a piece of work.

One of the most common types of fence is a plane fence. A plane fence or guide is used to set a plane cutter to a required distance from the edge of the piece of work being worked while acting as a stabiliser to help stop the plane moving / rocking the wrong way.

A plane fence is usually at the end of or slides along one or two plane arms.

The most common planes to have a fence are plough planes, combination planes, multi planes and certain rabbet planes.
