Manufacturer: Stanley
Plane Type: Fillister Rebate / Rabbet
Model No: 278
The Stanley rabbet and fillister plane number 278 is a quirky looking
plane which is different in appearance to nearly every Stanley plane
other than a few slight appearance similarities at a glance to the Stanley
238 weather strip plow plane.
The Stanley 278 plane was sold as standard with an adjustable

and 2 spurs.
The original fence spanned almost the full length of the plane and
had the arm slot in a central position of the fence. These planes
sometimes are found with a replacement
Stanley 78 fence
fitted.
This Stanley rebate plane has a 25mm (1 inch) cutter which spans the
full width of the plane.
The plane can be used by laying flat on either side.
The Stanley 278 has the hidden feature of a having a detachable front
piece to allow the plane to perform bullnose work.
The side of the plane bears the markings 'Stanley No 278'.
The cutter can be marked with the pattern 'PAT 10-17-16'.
