Category: Old Combination Planes
Extra Info: What is a Combination Plane? Combination Plane Videos
Manufacturer: Record
Plane Type: Combination (includes Plough)
Model No: 050A
The Record 050A combination plane is often referred to as the Record
plough / plow plane 050 or 050A
however officially it is a combination plane which includes the ability
to be a plough plane. See the extra info above for more on this.
The plane markings are displayed as
an 050 however the plane was catalogued as the 050A due to the plane
having a couple of additions over the catalogued 050.
The 050A had three additions over the 050:
- narrow cutter clamping bracket
- 1/8" (3mm) plough cutter
- 3/16" (4mm) plough cutter
All of these additions could be added and used on the catalogued 050,
turning the 050 into a 050A. As a result of people upgrading their 050's
with the extra parts, sometimes the packaging says 050 and sometimes
it says 050A.
The 050A is a comfortable sized plane for creating a wide range of functions
including:
- Plough
- Dado
- Tongue and groove
- Bead
- Centre bead
- Ovolo and Astragal
- Rabbet and fillester
The Record 050A consisted of a cast iron body,
depth gauge,
double
armed bridged
fence,
2x short
arms / rods (3 1/2"),
2x long
arms / rods
(7"), blade clamp,
spurs
for cross grain work, and 17 tungsten steel
cutters:
- Bead: 1/8", 3/16", 1/4", 5/16", 3/8", 7/16", 1/2"
- Plough: 1/4", 5/16", 3/8", 7/16", 1/2", 5/8", 7/8"
- Tongue: 1/4"
The combination of the various plane parts and the 17 standard cutters
used in conjunction with each other, offer thirty nine plane functions
in total.
The plane functions include the possibility of producing ovolo and
astragal moulds with the use of the beading cutters.
The 242mm (9 1/2 inch) long plane will cut grooves up to 7/8" wide,
up to 13mm (1/2") deep, up to 127mm (5") from the edge.
The plane will cut across end grain as well as with or along the grain.
The Record 050-A plane and its parts were finished with a nickel plating.
This finish was advertised as a rustless finish.
The Record 050 and 050-A combination planes were the first of Record's
first plough / combination planes. The 050 range of combination planes
were the only combination planes produced by Record; this range includes
the later modified 050-C model.
The Record 050 plane is heavily based upon the
Stanley 50 plane.
