Record 778 Plane Review By: I.Ball
Category: Old Fillister Planes
Extra Info: What is a Fillister Plane? Fillister Plane Videos
Manufacturer: Record
Plane Type: Duplex Rabbet / Rebate, Fillister
Model No: 778
The Record plane number 778 is a duplex rabbet and fillister plane from
the Record Tools rabbet plane range.
The Record 778 at a glance looks like the
Record 078
however on closer inspection there is a couple of subtle but useful
differences:
- The fence on the Record 778 has two arms, opposed to the one arm
on the Record 078.
- The fence is longer.
- The arms on the Record 778 pass right through the body, opposed to the Record
078 having the arm screw into the body.
- The Record 778 has been given a blade adjuster which locates with the top of the
blade, opposed to the lever adjuster found on the Record 078.
For these reasons the Record 778 is known as the Record improved rabbet plane no. 778.
The purpose of the arm modification was to create an ultra stable fence.
The purpose of the blade adjustment mechanism change was to combat reports that some users had
a tendancy of resting their thumb on the Record 078 blade adjusting lever which
sometimes resulted in the lever very slightly moving and as such altering the cut.
Please see the
Record 078 review
for the core details of the Record 778 other than the differences highlighted above.

Pob - While working on my Record 778 plane I found one of the screws which holds the fence mounts to the fence had gone missing. I measured the thumb screw as an 11/64th-24 pitch thread, the thread is BSW 3/16.
