Record 04 1/2 SS Plane Review By: I.Ball
Category: Old Smoothing Planes
Extra Info: What is a Smoothing Plane? Smoothing Plane Videos
Manufacturer: Record
Plane Type: Smoothing
Model No: 04 1/2 SS
The Record smoothing plane number 04 1/2 SS (Stay Set) is identical to the
Record 04 1/2 plane
with the exception of the cap iron design and the lever cap markings.
The "SS" part of the model name stands for "Stay Set".
The Record "Stay Set" cap iron was a two-piece cap iron which consisted
of an upper piece and a lower piece (deflector).
The main advantage of the SS cap iron is that the lower piece can be
quickly and easily removed/replaced without the need to remove/replace
the whole cap iron.
As such the blade can be sharpened/re-ground with only the very occasional
need to reposition the upper part slightly. Overall this is a great
time saver.
The Record SS planes were sold with a lever cap marked 'SS'.
The SS cap iron was advertised as being 'chatter proof guaranteed'.
Record pointed out this was due to the additional third pressure point
which the common one-piece cap irons didn't have.
When buying a secondhand Record 04 1/2 SS plane, it is well worth checking
the two piece cap iron is present below the SS lever cap as from experience,
not checking this can lead to disappointment.
