The Record smoothing plane number 04 1/2 is the widest of the standard
smoothing bench planes with a width of 261mm (10 1/4") and a 61mm (2 3/8")
cutter.
The 04 1/2 is made with high grade cast iron parts including machine
ground sides and sole.
The plane is also fitted with a comfortable shaped hardwood rear handle
and front knob. The earlier handles were made from Rosewood (pre 1950),
followed by Beech.
The Record 04 1/2 was first produced by C&J Hampton Ltd, Sheffield,
England who continued to produce the 04 1/2 through most of the 20th
century. The Record 04 1/2 plane was one of the first planes produced
by C&J Hampton Ltd's Record company.
