Record 713 Plane Review By: I.Ball

Manufacturer: Record

Plane Type: Skew Rebate

Model No: 713

The Record 713 is a skew rebate / rabbet plane especially designed for creating a fine finish when cutting across the grain, a finish which will require very little additional work, if any.

The reason for this is due to the angle of the cutter and the cut this makes.

The finish produced by the Record 713 skew rebate / rabbet plane when working across the grain is better than a rebate / rabbet plane with a squared edge mouth (if used properly).

The Record 713 and skewed rebate / rabbet planes in general are not quite as suited to with the grain work as there can be a very slight tendency for the plane to wonder.

It is for these reasons Record advertised that the skew rabbet planes weren't designed to replace the squared edged rabbet planes such as the Record 078 but instead they were designed to complement each other.

The Record 713 consists of the main body, skewed plane cutter, lever cap and a depth stop.

The 219mm (8 5/8 inch) body is made from high grade cast iron with the sides and sole being made flat and true.

The 38mm (1 1/2 inch) wide skewed plane blade is held in place with the small lever cap. The lever cap is secured / released by turning the steel nut at the top of the lever cap.

The plane was also equipped with an adjustable depth stop. From my observations these depth stops do seem to have had a particular tendency to not be present with these planes.

As with all skewed planes, particular attention needs to be taken with the profile of the plane blade's cutting edge to ensure the best possible cut is made with the plane.

The Record 713 is finished in the Record blue coloured japanning.

The Record 713 had a relatively short manufacturing period in the 1930's to early 1940's.

The Record 713 is one of only a handful of Record planes not to have a '0' at the start of the model number.

The Record 713 was the middle sized of three planes in this series. The other two were the Record 712 and the Record 714 planes.
