Extra Info: What is a Block Plane? Block Plane Videos
Manufacturer: Record
Plane Type: Block
Model No: 0230
The Record 0230 block plane is a 150mm (6 inch) long plane from the
Record block plane range.
The body's sides and sole were originally ground flat and square with
a polished finish. On either side of the plane there is a depression
offering additional grip for finger and thumb.
The plane has a 41mm (1 5/8 inch) wide tungsten steel plane cutter
which is secured in place with a knuckle joint lever cap.
The knuckle lever cap has a curvaceous domed shape which sits comfortably
in the palm of the hand.
The lever cap was coated in a nickel plate finish to give the plane a bright shiny
look as well as helping prevent the part from rust.
The nickel plate can be prone to coming off through many years of use / life so
it is not uncommon to find these planes with some partial nickel plate loss or even
complete loss.
The Record 0230 has a fine blade adjustment mechanism for accurately setting the
plane blade's depth and lateral orientation.
The adjustment mechanism locates with one of the grooves on the back of the blade
which passes control of the blade to the lateral adjustment lever and the rear knurled
nut depth adjuster.
The lateral lever arm / lever sits underneath the blade with the head of the arm
appearing at the rear of the plane where it is curved over the blade depth adjuster wheel.
The plane has a hardwood knob at the front of the plane to offer the user extra
grip and leverage when using the plane.
The Record 0230 block plane is a cross between the
Record 018 block plane
and the
Record 0220 block plane
The Record 0230 was manufactured for approximately 11 years between 1932 and 1943
before being discontinued during World War II.
