Record 018 Plane Review By: I.Ball
Category: Old Block Planes
Plane Type: Block
Model No: 018
The Record 018 plane is the premium plane of the Record block plane range.
The 018 block plane boasts fully adjustable features including an adjustable mouth and adjustable blade controls; both depth and lateral movements.
The plane is also fitted with a polished curvaceous snap knuckle cap which aesthetically gives the plane a sparkle while functionally being comfortable to hold and easy to use.
Other comfort aspects of the Record 018 plane are the finger grip depressions on the sides of the plane and the depressed finger hole on top of the front knob.
The adjustable mouth is controlled using the lever under the front knob. Ensure
to unscrew the front knob slightly before engaging the lever.
Fine adjustments can be made to the blade to help accurately position the blade in the correct position. There are two adjusters which help with this. The first is the blade depth adjuster which is located at the rear of the plane in the form of a knurled wheel nut. The second is the lateral adjuster, located behind the blade with the top of the lever curling over the depth adjuster wheel nut. Ensure the cap is loose before making adjustments.
The 018 is made to the common block plane 6 inch length with a 20 degree bed.
The Record 018 block plane is a knuckle lever cap block plane which was produced for the longest period of time out of all of these type of planes. The 018 is 6" (15.3cm) in length, weighs approximately 0.68kg (1 1/2lb) and is fitted with a 1 5/8" (4.2cm) blade.
The 018, advertised as 'the most refined plane of the range' is a fully adjustable plane with a mouth which can easily be adjusted for fine or coarse work.
