Extra Info: What is a Side Rabbet Plane? Side Rebate Plane Videos
Manufacturer: Veritas
Plane Type: Side Rabbet
Model No:
The Veritas Side Rebate Plane is a 114mm (4 1/2 inch) long plane, also
referred to as the Veritas Side Rabbet Plane.
This specialist plane is designed to assist cabinet makers in accurately
cleaning and trimming the sidewalls of dados, grooves, moulds and similar
tasks, regardless of the grain direction.
The tool is particularly useful when precision fitting is required such
as when a dado or groove needs to be widened very slightly in order
to precisely house a corresponding part.
It may be the case that a glass shelf or polished shelf is too thick
to fit in the corresponding grooves, rather than adjusting / changing
the shelves, it is much easier to alter the grooves, for this task the
Veritas side rebate is ideal.
The Veritas Side Rebate Plane is constructed from ductile cast iron with a flat,
lapped sole and thin edges which act as skates.
The thin edges allow the plane to be used in grooves as narrow as 4.5mm (3/16 inch).
This specialist plane has two 01 steel skewed cutters set at a very low 8 degree
angle.
The plane is set with a blade on each side so it can be used in a left or right
handed situation.
The nose of the Veritas Side Rebate Plane can also be removed to allow trimming
right into a corner of a piece of work such as on a stop groove.
The toe is removed and secured by turning the screw which runs through the toe at
the very front of the plane. The screw is designed to remain trapped within the nose
to help ensure the screw doesn't become lost.
The cutters are set in the plane with their bevel edges facing upwards.
The cutters must be kept very sharp to ensure the best results. When sharpening,
it is only the forward cutting edge bevel which needs sharpening (not the sides).
It is important the tip of the blade doesn't protrude beyond the skate, if it does
protrude, it will need filing back. Care must also be taken when sharpening the
blades to ensure the cutting edge of each blade mirrors the plane mouth(s) profile.
Both blades are secured with a single bridging clamp piece. The clamp is secured /
removed by turning the knurled brass nut located on top of the clamp.
The plane is constructed with a rear handle which offers the user comfort and control
when using the plane with its soft curved shaped.
The handle can be positioned on the left side or right side to suit which side of
the plane is being used; the handle is positioned on the opposite side to which
cutter is being used.
The handle is easily repositioned by pulling it back and flipping it to the required
side using the internal spring loaded system.
The Veritas Side Rebate Plane is equipped with a depth stop. The depth stop fixes
to the rear of the plane. The depth stop is secured in the required position with
the use of a knurled brass nut.
When required, the depth stop allows the user to set the depth at which the plane
should operate as well as acting a stabiliser when planing.
The depth stop operates to a maximum depth of 13mm (1/2 inch).
The Veritas Side Rebate Plane is sold in a plain brown cardboard box which has a
big photo label on the box with a photograph of the tool and details of the plane's
core information.
The Veritas Side Rebate Plane takes inspiration in the core design from earlier
planes such as the
Record 2506S side rebate plane
and the
large Edward Preston side rebate plane.
Veritas however have as usual innovated with a few useful improvements as well as
adding their distinctive modern look to the plane.
To help protect the plane from the elements, dings and scratches it can be useful
to store the plane in a plane sock or something similar.
The patented Veritas Side Rebate Plane is made in Canada.
* Important: please refer to the 'disclaimer' at the foot of this review.
* Wearing safety clothing and eye protection is usually a good idea to help protect against injury.
- The blade(s)/cutter(s) is very sharp, take suitable precautions when using/handling/storing
the plane/cutter(s) to prevent injury.
- Failure to loosen parts when making adjustments to the plane can result in damage
to the plane such as cross-threading screw threads. Never force a part to move.
- Overtightening parts can cause damage to the plane and the plane threads.
