The William Marples plough plane number M44 is a high grade cast iron plane
with a plated finish. The plane is also spelt as the William Marples
plow plane number M44 in some parts of the world.
The plane has an adjustable depth gauge, two arms, a bridge fence,
and orginally was supplied with 8 cutters as standard:
- 1/8"
- 3/16"
- 1/4"
- 5/16"
- 3/8"
- 7/16"
- 1/2"
- 9/16"
There were also some additional cutters available:
4mm, 6mm, 9mm, 12mm.
The M44 cuts grooves up to 5/8" in depth and up to 5" from the edge
of the work.
The selected blade is held in place with the use of the clamp and clamping
screw.
The bridged fence can be used on either side of the plane and additionally
offers the user a comfortably place to grip the plane.
The plane will cut across end grain as well as with or along the grain.
The William Marples M-44 plough /plow plane and its parts were finished
with a nickel plated finish. The nickel plate finish has a dual function
of giving the plane a bright appearance while helping prevent the plane
from rusting.
The M-44 is almost identical to the
Record 044 plough / plow plane.
Advertised in 1937 as:
M44 Plough Plane
Rustless plated. With adjustable depth gauge, etc. Will cut grooves 5/8" deep up
to 5" from edge. Complete with eight cutters 1/8" to 9/16". 17/6 each.
