Hollow And Round Plane are woodwork
planes used for planing curved convex and concave shapes.
'Hollow and Round Planes' is a name traditionally given to
wooden moulding planes
which have a hollow sole or a round sole and which were paired together with a
same sized corresponding plane to give a pair of hollow and round planes.
A wooden
round (convex) plane
produces and is used on hollow (concave) work with a wooden
hollow (concave) plane
doing the opposite producing and used on round (convex) work.
Wooden round planes and wooden hollow planes have been made since at least the 1600's
and I would imagine have been around many, many centuries before in some form.
With traditional wooden round moulding planes there is often a number on the rear of the
plane to indicate its size.
This number is not always present which can be for a number
of reasons including it is an early round plane when they didn't have numbers, a user has
made their own plane, a user has adjusted a different moulding plane,
it has worn away, it has been overstamped with a owners name or it could have been sanded off.
