The old British wooden routers were also known by the names 'old grannie's tooth router'
or 'old woman's tooth router'.
The old routers appear in many shapes and sizes with many of the wooden
routers which surface appearing to be user made. The named routers
made by known manufacturers appear a lot less frequently.
The routers made by manufacturers tend to be of a similar shape with flat
sides at either end and on top with curves on the other sides.
The routers can take various sized cutters which are secured in place
with the use of a usually quite chunky wedge. The cutters which are
often used are old wooden plough plane cutters.
This old router picture is of a wooden router made by Speight of Leeds.
From what I have observed there are many, many different wooden plane router designs
of many shapes and sizes, just looking at the few old wooden router photos we have
on display here demonstrates this.
Old wooden routers have all the hallmarks of making a good area for collectors to
collect.
Wooden routers were the fore-runners of router which led the way for the devolopment of the iron hand routers such as the Stanley 71 Router and the Record 071 Router
