The Union smoothing plane number 4 1/2 was the widest of the Union
smoothing plane range.
The body of the plane is constructed from cast iron. The sole and the
sides of the body were originally machined and ground to make sure the
plane body is flat and true.
The top-side of the plane body is finished with a black finish which
is usually synonymous with the Stanley plane range.
The Union 4 1/2 plane has the lateral lever adjuster and frog adjusting
mechanism which is almost identical to most planes of this type.
The plane has a shaped hardwood rear handle and Rosewood front knob.
The plane blade is marked 'Union MFG Co, New Britain CT, USA'.
