The Stanley 61 gauge is made from beech.
The stem of the gauge is marked out as a ruler with the markings going up to 6 inches. Each inch is broken down in to 1/16" increments.
The wooden head is secured to the stem in the required position with the use of a wooden thumb screw usually made from Boxwood.
This type of marking gauge was advertised and referred to as a 'Square Head Marking Gauge'.
"Stanley SW (SW within a heart), Made In USA" - found on the bottom end of the stem.
"No. 61" - found on the bottom end of the stem.
