Spear And Jackson Saw 179 Review By: I.Ball
Category: Old Hand Saws
Manufacturer: Spear And Jackson
Tool Type: Hand Saw
Model No: 179
This model of Spear And Jackson hand saw number 179 is fitted with a
Beech hardwood handle and a spring tempered blade.
The handle is secured to the blade with the use of five
brass buttons, one of which is faced with a medallion with the markings
'Spear And Jackson, Sheffield'. The buttons are set raised from the handle.
The buttons can be tightened or unscrewed by using a flat head screwdriver
on the reverse side of the handle.
This example of Spear And Jackson saw had a brass outer button shield
with a ring of green on the reverse side of the handle to where these
usually are seen. This appears to be the original position. I am unsure
at this time if this was the design of the Spear and Jackson 179 saws
or if this was a special example / special request.
The saw shown is 24 inches in length and has 8 teeth per inch (tpi).
There were different lengthed and tpi versions of this saw produced.
Handle: Beech
Number Of Buttons: 5
Type Of Buttons: Brass
Medallion Markings: 'Spear And Jackson, Sheffield'
Blade Markings:
'Spear And Jackson Ltd, Spring Temper, Sovereign, 179, Sheffield, England'
