Robert Sorby Square Review By: I.Ball
Category: Old Squares
Extra Info: What is a Try Square? Try Square Videos
Manufacturer: Robert Sorby
Tool Type: Try Square
Model No:
I have given this Robert Sorby square a temporary model number of 1
until a better number or a genuine number is discovered. I don't believe
these squares were ever given a model number.
This Robert Sorby try square has an exotic Ebony stock,
with a thick brass plate on the inside edge.
The stock also has an elaborate brass inlay on either side of the handle
which with the contrast of the thick black Ebony really gives this
square a stunning look.
This Robert Sorby square was made in various sizes. The square photographed
was 12 inches long. The most common size was probably the 6 inch square.
This Ebony square was marked 'Robt Sorby & Sons, Sheffield' along with the symbols
of the Robert Sorby kangaroo and cross.
Robert Sorby weren't the only maker of these Ebony try squares, a number of makers
of the time made virtually identical squares.
There were also very similar try squares produced with a Rosewood stock.

"Just stumbled across your website and an absolute treasure trove of information.
I was recently given an old Stanley 110 block plane and wanted to know more about it.
Your website told me everything I needed to know.
But there is so much more to read. I forsee me spending a lot of time just reading
page after page. I can appreciate how much time this will have taken to put together.
I just wanted to let you know that your hard work is appreciated."
