Manufacturer: Record
Tool Type: Spokeshave
Model No: 053
This review contains photos and info about the Record 053 spokeshaves
also referred to as the adjustable mouth blue Record spokeshaves.
The spokeshave photographed here is a very deep dark blue (the photos
have made it almost look black).
At this time I believe the Record 053 was only made with a flat sole.
The Record 053 spokeshave was advertised as an adjustable mouth spokeshave
also referred to as an adjustable throat spokeshave.
The adjustable mouth / throat allows the user to adjust the thickness
of shaving between coarse workings through to fine work.
The Record 053 spokeshaves are 10 inch long adjustable throat spokeshaves.
The adjustable mouth is adjusted using the mouth adjusting nut located on the top
of the frame at the front.
The blades are manually adjusted into position.
The blades are locked in position using the securing screw.
The handles on the 053 are advertised as a 'raised handle'; the handles are arched
and raised slightly above the core middle section.
Each handle has a circular hole cut in the end to allow the tool to be hung from
a hook in the workshop.
The Record 053 with its flat sole / straight bottom is suitable for a number of
fine shaving applications including on convex curved edges.
The tool can be used by pushing or pulling the shave to produce fine shavings.
As with nearly all tools it is important to regularly sharpen the blade to ensure
a sharp edge is always in use; in doing so it will create far better results and
a lot less frustration.
