Manufacturer: Record
Plane Type: Smoothing
Model No: 03
The Record smoothing plane number 03 is a smoothing plane which
is often recognised as the smallest of the Record smoothing planes
at 200mm (8 inch) in length.
Apart from a 10 year period 1933 - 1943
when the Record 02 models were produced, the Record 03 models have always
been the smallest smoothing plane produced.
The plane is constructed from high grade cast iron with a crucible cast
tungsten steel cutter and a lever cap made with high grade cast iron
with a plated finish.
The 03 is constructed with a cast iron body, frog, lever cap, cap iron,
tungsten steel cutter, rear wooden handle and front knob.
The plane's central unit is the frog on which the blade lays at a 45
degree angle. The frog is a multi-purpose unit for controlling the plane
blade and the cut produced.
The frog is equpped with a lateral lever adjuster located just
behind the blade / at the top of the frog.
The lateral lever adjuster
allows the user to make controlled lateral adjustments (move the blade side-to-side)
to the blade; this is useful for aligning the blade to ensure it is
not skewed.
The frog is also equipped with a brass blade adjuster wheel at the rear
of the frog for adjusting the blade depth.
The final adjustable part of the frog is it has an adjusting screw located
behind the frog at the base. The frog adjuster screw is used to position the
frog which in effect sets the size of mouth opening.
The Record 03 plane was supplied with a 45mm (1 3/4 inch) wide tungsten
steel plane blade.
The plane blade is secured in the desired position with the use of the
lever cap.
The plane sported a comfortable shaped Rosewood rear handle and front
knob on the early versions and Beech handle and knob on later versions.
Other ways to date the earlier versions of Record 03 planes were they
had a flat frog face, quite a dark rich blue paint, a dark blue box and a
trade label with the wording "Genuine Record Made In England Trade Mark".
This Record 03 plane was produced by C&J Hampton Ltd, Sheffield,
England for most of the 20th century.
As with all the Record bench planes, the Record 03 has universal
interchanging parts.
