Record 074 Plane Review By: I.Ball

Manufacturer: Record

Plane Type: Shoulder Rebate

Model No: 074

The Record shoulder rebate plane number 074 has a shouldered blade which spans the full width of the plane. The blade is secured in place with the use of a curvacious lever cap which locks in place with the use of a securing wheel/screw underneath the lever cap.

The depth at which the blade cuts can be adjusted using the fine adjustment adjuster milled nut at the rear of the plane. The cutter on these planes are bed on a low angle.

The Record 074 plane has the advantage of having an adjustable mouth.

More recently Lie-Nielsen made their version of 073 model (a slimmer version of the 074) in the form of the Lie-Nielsen 073 Shoulder Plane.

Removing The Blade: To remove the blade from the 074 plane, first of all the lever cap must be removed. The lever cap is removed by firstly loosening the securing wheel/screw on the underside of the lever cap then once loosened the lever cap can be lifted out from the plane. The blade can now be moved/removed.

To replace the blade the above process is reversed; care should be taken to ensure the blade is carefully placed in position to ensure no damage/dulling occurs to the edge of the blade.

When placing the blade into the plane the bevel side of the cutter goes upwards, at the same time the hole at the top of the blade locates with the fine adjustment adjuster milled nut; this allows the fine adjuster to move the blade.

When using the fine adjuster the lever cap securing wheel/screw should first be loosened record 074 plane slightly; if it is not loosened the blade will be locked in place and as a result will not move, this can lead to cross-threading of the fine adjustment adjuster milled nut.

Adjusting The Mouth: The mouth of the Record 074 plane is adjusted by firstly loosening the locking-screw located on top of the plane at the front-end above the nose. The locking screw is loosened using a flat head screwdriver; the screw head is 1/2 inch).

The mouth can then be adjusted by turning the mouth adjusting screw located at the very front of the plane on the nose. The mouth screw is adjusted using a flat head screwdriver.

The locking screw should then be tightened once the required mouth width is found.
