Record 07 Plane Review By: I.Ball

Manufacturer: Record

Plane Type: Jointer

Model No: 07

The Record jointer plane number 07 is a 22 inch (559mm) long plane fitted with a 2 3/8" (61mm) wide crucible cast tungsten steel plane blade.

The Record 07 plane is the second longest plane produced in the Record plane range. It is equal in length to the Stanley number 7 jointer plane.

The plane is equipped with a comfortable shaped rear hardwood handle and front knob. The hardwood handle and knob are usually made from Rosewood or varnished Beech.

During the the Record number 07 plane's long production period, the design of the plane stayed pretty constant.

The Record number 07 is made with a high grade iron body, frog, lever cap, lateral adjuster, best quality steel cap iron, and crucible cast tungsten steel cutter.

The body is machined with ground sides and sole. The machining and grounding ensure the plane body is flat and true. The top-side of the plane body is finished with the blue finish which is synonymous with the Record plane range.

The cast iron frog is the central part of the plane on which the blade rests, the lateral lever pivots on and the depth adjuster operates.

The frog can be used to adjust the mouth thickness at which the shavings pass through.

This is adjusted by loosening the frog screws (the pair of screws located in the depressions on the front of the frog) and then turning the screw located at the base of the rear of the frog. Moving the position of the frog in effects changes the mouth from fine to wide open which in turn regulates the thickness of the shavings.

The plane's lateral blade adjusting lever is located just behind the blade, at the top of the frog. This lever pivots side-to-side which in turn adjusts the cutter side-ways (note: the lever cap must be released when making these alterations).

The blade's depth adjusting mechanism is controlled by turning the brass wheel at the rear of the frog (note: the lever cap must be released when making these alterations).

The plane blade is stiffened with the use of a cap iron. The cap iron helps reduce chatter and assists in curling the shavings to prevent splintering the work-piece, particularly when working against the grain.

The plane blade and cap iron are locked in position with the lever cap. This further reduces chattering. The lever cap has a plated finish which is usually a nickel plating. The lever cap has a pear shaped hole in the middle in which a screw runs through, the shape helps prevent the cap loosening.

As with all the Record bench planes, the Record 07 has universal interchanging parts.
