Veritas Concave Spokeshave Review By: I.Ball
Category: Spokeshaves
Extra Info: What is a Spokeshave? Spokeshave Videos
Manufacturer: Veritas
Tool Type: Spokeshave
Model No: N/A
The Veritas Concave spokeshave is a 10 1/2" long shave made from ductile
cast iron, with selected brass fittings and fitted with rich wooden handles.
The comfortable handles are made from hardwood (formerly Bubinga).
The handles are finished with slim brass fittings which give
the shave an extra look of elegance as the slender brass rings sit between
the reddish wooden handles and black body.
As well as the aesthetically pleasing look, the spokeshave has been
designed for comfort with constant curves throughout the shaves parts.
These curved parts result in no uncomfortable corners or edges which
help ensure the tool can be used comfortably for long periods.
The Veritas Concave spokeshave is fitted (usually) with a 3mm (1/8 inch) thick A2
steel cutter. There is also the option of a 01 steel cutter.
The blade is locked in place with the use of a lever cap. The blade is secured in
position by placing the bottom eye of the lever cap through the securing screw and
then sliding the lever cap downwards so the securing screw is positioned in the
top eye of the lever cap.
Once the lever cap is in position and the blade is in the required position, the
lever cap is locked in place by turning and locking the knurled locking nut located
at the top of the lever cap. This process is reversed for removing / loosening the
lever cap and blade.
The blade has a fine adjustment mechanism in the form or two knurled brass nuts
which locate with the top of the blade on either side.
These brass nuts allow the blade depth to be accurately set when used in tandem
or the skew of the blade to be set by using one of the brass nuts more than the
opposite side.
Note: ensure the lever cap is loosened before making adjustments to help prevent damage.
The concave Veritas spokeshave has as the name suggests, a concaved sole.
The curved sole / concave bottom is suitable for a number of fine shaving and shaping
applications on convex curved edges.
The spokeshave body beds the blade at a 45 degree angle.
The spokeshave is also supplied with two shims offering the option of effectively
changing the mouth opening size for finer work. This is achieved by placing the
shims underneath the blade. The shims consist of a purple shim (0.005") and a blue
shim (0.010").
The shave also has available an optional extra hardware kit for making and fitting
your own handles should you wish to.
The Veritas concave spokeshave is also available in
Veritas flat spokeshave
and
Veritas round spokeshave
versions.
These spokeshaves are made to a straight handle spokeshave design opposed to a slightly
higher raised arched handle design.
The spokeshave is presented in a cardboard box (usually white) with a photo label
of the tool. The box also contains a Veritas concave spokeshave instruction leaflet.
This patented Veritas spokeshave is made in Canada.
