Veritas Low Angle Smoothing Plane Review By: I.Ball

Manufacturer: Veritas Tools

Plane Type: Smoothing

Model No: Low Angle

This Veritas Low Angle Smoothing Plane review is of the plane made by Veritas Tools of Canada, the review contains lots of info, photos and videos.

The Veritas Low Angle Smoothing Plane is a fully adjustable, low angle smoothing plane from the Veritas Tools hand plane range designed for many smoothing work jobs including being suitable for end-grain work.

The Veritas Low Angle Smoothing Plane is 254mm (10") in length and has a width of 64mm (2 1/2").

It is made from stress-relieved ductile cast iron with hardwood rear handle and front knob.

The Veritas Low Angle Smoothing Plane employs an adjustable mouth system.

Adjusting the mouth offers a mechanism of controlling the cut ranging from a fine mouth for fine shavings to a wide mouth for heavy cuts. Generally a finer mouth is the mouth opening of choice.

The adjustable mouth is controlled by unlocking the front wooden knob slightly to release the sliding sole front section (the toe), once released, the toe can be slid forward and backwards using the mouth adjustment screw (located above the mouth).

Sliding the toe away creates a wider mouth, sliding the toe towards creates a finer mouth.

Once the desired mouth size is reached, tighten the front wooden knob to lock the toe / mouth in place; as with all pieces, be sure to not overtighten to avoid damage.

The Veritas Low Angle Smoothing Plane also features a blade fine adjuster; the controller is a sizeable knurled brass nut located at the rear of the blade.

The blade adjuster allows accurate blade depth adjustments and controlled lateral adjustments.

The blade is further aided by a set screw on either side of the plane which stops the blade from moving when being used.

The blade usually offered with this plane as standard is one of the blade types with a 25 degree bevel.

The frog on the Veritas Low Angle Smoothing Plane has a low angle 12 degree bed which with the most common 25 degree bevel blade gives a cutting angle of 37 degrees; this low angle combination makes it best suited for end grain work.

The 38 degree bevelled blade giving a 50 degree cutting angle is best suited for smoothing work. The 38 degree bevel is also known as the 'York Pitch'.

The 50 degree bevelled blade giving a 62 degree cutting angle is best suited for difficult grain or reversing grain.

The steeper the cutting angle, the more force and energy that will be needed.

The plane is supplied in a Veritas cardboard box.

Cautions / Notes

* Important: please refer to the 'disclaimer' at the foot of this review.
* Wearing safety clothing and eye protection is usually a good idea to help protect against injury.

- The blade(s)/cutter(s) is very sharp, take suitable precautions when using/handling/storing the plane/cutter(s) to prevent injury.

- Failure to loosen parts when making adjustments to the plane can result in damage to the plane such as cross-threading screw threads. Never force a part to move.
