Veritas Skew Block Plane Review By: I.Ball

Category: Block Planes

Manufacturer: Veritas

Plane Type: Block

Model No: Skew

This Veritas Skew Block Plane review covers the Veritas Skew Block Plane made by Veritas Tools of Canada.

The Veritas Skew Block Plane is another great addition to the extensive Veritas block plane range.

The Veritas Skew Block Plane is a fully adjustable, multi-function plane which packs a great punch.

The Veritas Skew Block Plane combines the great features of a low angle block plane and a skew rabbet plane to form a plane which has many advantages including making it very good at cross grain work, it can perform jobs most block planes can't such as trimming tenon's and planing rabbets.

he plane is 6 3/8" long by 1 3/4" wide, made from ductile cast iron.

The Skew Block Plane is supplied with a 38mm (1 1/2") wide blade which is skewed at a 15 degree angle. The blade is 3mm (1/8") thick.

The blade has a 25 degree bevel which when positioned on the 12 degree bed gives a low angle 37 degree cutting angle.

The blade's cutting edge sits flush with the only opening on the plane's side, this creates the rabbet (rebate) feature.

The blade is protected from movement with the use of two internal set screws.

Veritas Tools make the Veritas Skew Block Plane blade in three types:

     - O1 (hardened to Rockwell 58-60)
     - A2 (hardened to Rockwell 60-62)
     - PMV-11

The plane is also equipped with a spur / scoring blade to help with cross grain work.

The Veritas Skew Block Plane has a blade fine adjuster for making accurate adjustments to the cutter depth and lateral position.

Like many of the top block planes, the Veritas Skew Block Plane also has an adjustable mouth to aid in controlling the cut allowing anywhere from a fine mouth to a wide mouth.

The Veritas Skew Block Plane is available in righthand or lefthand versions. The most common type is the righthand version.

The plane is usually supplied in a Veritas cardboard box.

Cautions / Notes

* Important: please refer to the 'disclaimer' at the foot of this review.
* Wearing safety clothing and eye protection is usually a good idea to help protect against injury.

- The blade(s)/cutter(s) is very sharp, take suitable precautions when using/handling/storing the plane/cutter(s) to prevent injury.

- Failure to loosen parts when making adjustments to the plane can result in damage to the plane such as cross-threading screw threads. Never force a part to move.

- Overtightening parts can cause damage to the plane and the plane threads.
