Kunz Round Spokeshave 51 AR Review By: I.Ball
Category: Spokeshaves
Extra Info: What is a Spokeshave? Spokeshave Videos
Manufacturer: Kunz
Tool Type: Spokeshave
Model No: 51AR
This review is about the German made, Kunz 51AR spokeshave.
The Kunz 51AR has a curved sole / round bottom.
The 'R' indicates the spokeshave has a 'Round bottom'.
The Kunz 51AR spokeshave is made from grey cast iron with the Kunz bright
green finish and a bright red lever cap.
These adjustable spokeshaves are 250mm (10 inch) long and are equipped
with a 51mm (2 inch) wide cutter and with a fine blade adjustment mechanism.
The blade can be accurately adjusted by turning the two knurled nuts
situated just above the top of the blade.
Each nut moves the blade on that respective side upwards or downwards
as the nut is turned.
The blade is secured in place with the red lever cap. The lever cap is secured /
loosened using the lever cap securing screw.
The handles are arched and raised slightly above the core middle section.
Each handle has a circular hole cut in the end to allow the tool to be hung from
a hook in the workshop.
The Stanley 51AR with a curved sole / round bottom is suitable for a number of
fine shaving applications but is especially suited to concave curved edges.
The tool can be used by pushing or pulling the shave to produce fine shavings.
The spokeshave is usually used with the cutter set in the bevel-down position with
a good sharp edge. The cutter edge shouldn't be set too far out that it creates
too thick-a-cut or wedges and not too far in that it barely takes a shaving.
As with nearly all tools it is important to regularly sharpen the blade to ensure
a sharp edge is always in use; in doing so it will create far better results and
a lot less frustration.
This spokeshave design is heavily based upon the Stanley and Record round spokeshaves
with the obvious difference being the colour.
The Kunz 51AR round spokeshave is also made with a flat sole in the form of the
Kunz 51A flat spokeshave.
