Marples No. 153 Review By: I.Ball
Category: Old Carving Tools
Manufacturer: Marples
Tool Type: Wood Carving Tools
Model No: 153 / M153
The Marples 153 / M153 carving tool set was a six piece set with small carving
tools in which was marketed as a beginner carving tool set.
Each of the carving tools were fitted with a polished finished hardwood handle; the
wood used was usually Mahogany, they went on to be made with Danta wood
(looks like Mahogany).
The Marples brand name was displayed on the handles.
The handles were finished with steel ferrules.
The blades were forged from the best quality cast steel which were
accurately ground to a good profiled edge.
The Marples number 153 / M153 set consisted of the following tools:
1 x 7mm skew chisel
1 x 5mm curved vee tool
1 x 8mm curved chisel
1 x 8mm chisel
1 x 6mm straight gouge
1 x 9mm curved shallow gouge
This set was presented in a blue cardboard box.
The box says 'small carving tools set of six', 'Marples No 153', Record Ridgway Tools Ltd., Made In Sheffield England'.
This set was also produced with Boxwood handles, please see the
Marples Boxwood Carving Set - Six Piece Review.
William Marples produced a range of wood carving tools
under their 'Shamrock' brand up until 1965 (according to my studies
so far)
This set went on to be
made by Record Ridgway in the 1970's (the same company which
made the Record planes at the same time and later).
During 1988 - 1997+, the Marples 153 / M153 Wood Carving Set was manufactured
by Record Marples, during this time the wood used was Danta which is a
type of wood which looks like Mahogany.
