If the rule hasn't been looked after or if the rule has been heavily used, the numbers can be worn/faded.

The brass sliding caliper can sometimes be seized up when the tool hasn't been used for a long time.

Sometimes these rules have paint, ink or oil on them which can obscure the numbers.
