A Masting Plane
or Boat Builders Plane
also traditionally referred to as a
'Spar Plane'
or 'Forkstaff Plane' is a wooden plane which looks like a
wooden smoothing plane
but with a hollow (concave) sole.
A masting plane, as the name suggests, is a tool used historically by boat builders
and shipwrights.
These planes can be used for rounding a pole and for convex work.
A masting plane is wider than the widest
hollow plane
from a
hollow and round plane set.
That I can think of, I don't believe there are any other similar mainstream planes produced
since the old wooden masting planes with a wide hollow (concave) sole.
The wooden masting plane is the most commonly found masting plane today.
