A Combination Square
is in effect an adjustable
Try Square
with additional features which usually include a detailed measurement ruler, a mitre
angle, often a level bubble and sometimes a marking pin.
A combination square like a try square is a popular tool used to quickly check and/or
mark the squareness (90 degrees / right-angle) of a piece of work, it is also used to
mark straight lines by running a pencil, marking knife or the combination squares
marking pin (if it has one) along the edge of the combination squares straight blade.
A combination square can also be used to measure and mark 45 degree angles (mitre) with
the 45 degree angle mitre angle on the stock (handle).
A combination square can be adjusted by sliding the rule through the stock to the
desired postion / length and then locking the rule in position to give a try square
of a certain size, to give a straight line measurement or to give a depth gauge.
The rule usually has a special central groove running the length on one side of the rule
which is usually needed due to the combination square design; to allow controlled sliding,
to stop the rule falling out and to aid in locking the rule in position.
A combination square also often has a level built into the stock to allow checking
the work is level.
If the square is equipped with a marking pin, this is usually located at the foot
of the stock.
A combination square is a tool found in most woodworkers tool kits.
There have been a number of combination square makers in the past, and present. Below are a list of a few well known combination square manufacturers:
