The top of the frame has a flat surface which is where it gets its name

There is a brass knurled thumb screw located at the beginning of the

Frame Sizes: 14", 16", 18", 20", 22" and 24".
(This particular tool in the photograph had an 18 inch frame).
"Cast-Steel, Henry Disston & Sons, Philad'a USA, 2, Warranted"
- found on the face of the flat back steel frame.
