Sorby Plane No.4 Review By: I.Ball
Category: Old Smoothing Planes
Extra Info: What is a Smoothing Plane? Smoothing Plane Videos
Manufacturer: I. Sorby
Plane Type: Smoothing
Model No: 4
The I Sorby Smoothing Plane appears to be a cross between what became a traditional No. 3 and No. 4.
This plane has the same length as a Stanley No. 3 plane and the same width as a Stanley No. 4 plane.
For now I have labelled this plane as a No.4 pending finding this plane
in old trade catalogues.
The body is marked 'I Sorby', 'Sheffield' and 'England'.
The plane was fitted with a Rosewood front knob and a Rosewood rear handle;
the rear handle would have originally had a trade label on top of the
rear handle.
The plane was fitted with an 'I Sorby, Sheffield' plane iron.
The Sorby 4 Plane is very similar in appearance to the
Stanley 4 Smoothing Plane
with the main differences being the markings and the dimensions.
