Manufacturer: Record
Plane Type: Smoothing
Model No: CS88
The Record Calvert Stevens smoothing plane number CS88 was a high-end bench
plane made to a high-spec to include many of the best considered features
and quality of past planes. As such the plane was advertised as
"The Ultimate Bench Plane".
The plane boasts a gun metal lever cap, a Record "Stay-Set" cap iron,
a laminated cutter, Norris style blade adjustment, Rosewood handles
with the whole plane being precision made to help ensure a smooth, sharp
cut.
The special laminated cutter was advertised as lasting 8-times longer than traditional
plane irons.
The frog was advertised as having greater points of reference to give an even
more stable, level, foundation for the plane iron to seat in order to help eliminate
chatter.
The plane was presented in a top quality fitted wooden box, lined with red baise
and supplied with a Calvert Stevens leaflet booklet and certificate of conformity.
This plane only had a short production run, being produced for a few years in the
late 1980's to 1991 during the start of the Record Marples manufacturing era.
