Record 722 Router Review By: I.Ball

Category: Old Routers

Manufacturer: Record

Plane Type: Router

Model No: 722

The Record router number 722 is a small handy portable router which comes with one 6mm (1/4") cutter.

The cutter can be positioned to operate as an open mouth router or a closed mouth router including being able to carry out bullnose work.

The open throat / mouth is the section underneath where there is an arch / bridge. The closed throat / mouth is on the oposite side where there is a metal border in front of the cutting area.

There are two seperate holes to place the cutter stem through; one hole in the center and one hole towards the rear.

The cutter is held in position with the combination of a draw bolt and nut. The cutter is quickly adjusted by unscrewing the nut slightly, allowing the cutter to be moved easily up and down or rotated.

The Record 722 router is not fitted with a fine cutter adjustment screw.

Due to the small size there are no knobs/handles installed like its larger brothers the 071 and 071 1/2 routers, instead the router has some central panels to grip.

There are a couple of almost identical routers to the 722 made by other makers such as Stanley and Edward Preston.

The Record 722 is a rebranded version of the small Edward Preston No. 22 Router, put in to production after Record took over the Edward Preston planes division. The Stanley version is the Stanley 271 Small Router.

In recent times Veritas Tools have introduced a small router which is similar to the Record 722 Router and Stanley 271 Router, see the Veritas Small Router Review.

How To Sharpen A Router Cutter For A Record No. 722

record small router 722

Sharpen the router cutter on the bevelled side of the cutter using a slip stone / sharpening stone. Once sharp, remove any burrs / wirey pieces of metal with a flat swipe or two of the slip stone underneath the cutter.

The router cutter shouldn't be sharpened from underneath; the underneath should be flat with no bevel.
