Extra Info: What is a Block Plane? Block Plane Videos
Manufacturer: Record
Plane Type: Block
Model No: 060 1/2
The Record 060 1/2 plane is part of the Record block plane range.
The 060 1/2 block plane is fitted with a hooded level cap, a tungsten
steel plane blade, a lateral lever blade adjuster, a blade depth adjuster,
a brass front knob, and an adjustable mouth lever.
The handy sized 6 inch long plane can comfortably be wielded
within the palm of the hand. The plane includes a couple of features
to help with the comfort and control of the plane. The 060 1/2 has a finger
grip indent on the outer edge of both plane sides along with a brass
front knob with a finger press indent on the top side.
The Record 060 1/2 is one of the top of the range block planes from the Record
block plane list. The reason for this status is due to having an adjustable
blade and the desirable feature for cabinet makers of having an adjustable mouth.
The adjustable mouth allows the user to set whether they wish for the plane to
carry out fine work (fine mouth) through to coarse work (open mouth).
The adjustable mouth is formed with a fitted metal plate at the forward end of
the sole which is separate to the main body. This metal plate can be accurately
slid forward or backwards to the required position by turning the mouth adjuster.
The mouth adjuster is the funny metal lever wrapped around the underside of the
front knob. Prior to using this adjuster, ensure to unscrew the brass knob slightly
to release the lever and then tighten the knob again once the mouth is in the
required position. Failure to do so could result in damage to the mechanism.
The 060 1/2 plane has a 1 3/8 inch blade which sits on a 12 degree bed. The 12
degree bed is at a lower angle than the usual 20 degree bed found on most block
planes for this reason the Record 060 1/2 is a low angle block plane.
The Record 060 1/2 plane blade has a series of grooves on the rear
side of the blade, towards the top end which locate into the lateral blade adjuster
mechanism.
The lateral lever is located behind the blade with the lever appearing from the
top of the blade curving over the brass blade depth adjuster. The lateral lever
allows fine adjustment of the blade laterally (sideways). The blade can also be
adjusted inwards and outwards (depth of cut) by turning the knurled brass adjuster
at the rear of the plane.
Ensure to loosen the lever cap before making these adjustments. Failure to do
so could result in damage to the mechanism.
The hooded lever cap locks the blade in place by sliding the lever sideways
(old Record 060 1/2 planes) or turning the brass knurled knob (new Record 060 1/2 planes).
