Manufacturer: Rabone Chesterman

Tool Type: Tape Measure

Model No: 281

The leather Rabone Chesterman tape measure has a flexible fibron tape, a brass winder and a plastic coated, leather, stitched case.

The example of the tape measure seen didn't have a number marked on the brass winder. I have matched the tape to Rabone Chesterman tape measure model number 281.

If the tape measure looks the same but has a fabric tape then it should be Rabone Chesterman tape measure number 241.

The tape typically measured with the measurement commencing from the outside of the ring at the end of the tape, i.e. ring is included in the measurement.

The most common measurements on these tape measures were feet and inches on the top side.

The tapes measures which surface most regularly today are 33ft, 66ft, and 100ft.

In 1967 the Rabone Chesterman 281 tape measure was sold in sizes 33ft, 50ft, 66ft, and 100ft. It was also available in 10m, 15m, 20m, 25m, 30m, 50m and 50m.

Are There Any Problems / Issues With This Tool?

The finger pull can be missing or replaced.

Another less desirable fault which can occur is the winder handle no longer holds shut; it flaps about when held upside down.

The case stitching can sometimes be coming apart at the seams.
