Veritas Low Angle Spokeshave Review By: I.Ball

Category: Spokeshaves

Manufacturer: Veritas Tools

Tool Type: Spokeshave

Model No: N/A

This Veritas Low Angle Spokeshave review takes a look at the Veritas Low Angle Spokeshave manufactured by Veritas Tools of Canada.

The Veritas Low Angle Spokeshave is an aluminium, black powder coated low angle spokeshave with solid brass locking nuts and at the time of writing this review a PM-V11 spokeshave cutter.

The Veritas Low Angle Spokeshave is another of Veritas Tools based on a traditional tool with Veritas putting its inovation and twist on the tool.

The Veritas Low Angle Spokeshave has a 20 degree bed angle and a spokeshave cutter with a 20 degree bevel angle and a 25 degree micro-bevel angle.

This Veritas spokeshave includes a toe-piece in its design which allows the spokeshave to be suitable for flat, convex and concave work. This is acheived by positioning the toe in one poistion for flat and convex work and flipping the toe 180 degrees for concave work.

The toe piece also adjusts to control the depth of cut.

The mouth opening is controlled by moving the cutter backwards or forwards.

The Veritas Low Angle Spokeshave used to be made with an A2 cutter, here in the UK at least, it is now supplied with a PM-V11 spokeshave cutter (at the time of writing).

The cutter is 1/8" (3mm) thick by 2 3/8" (61mm) wide. This is wider than the standard Veritas spokeshaves and wider than most standard spokeshaves such as the Stanley 151, this cutter is also the same width as wider bench planes, numbers 4 1/2, 5 1/2, 6 and 7's.

The spokeshave can be used in either a push or pull action allowing the tool to constantly be worked with the grain, an important technique when working with a low angle spokeshave.

This tool is most effective by skewing the cut, if you don't the spokeshave is likely to glide across the wood instead of cutting the wood.

Weighs just over 6 oz.

At the time time of writing this review, the Veritas Low Angle Spokeshave is supplied in a Veritas cardboard box.
