This Veritas Scrub Plane review is a review of the Veritas Scrub Plane
produced by Veritas Tools Inc. of Canada.
The Veritas Scrub Plane is a simple hand plane suited to carrying out
the rougher work and removing lots of stock quickly.
The scrub plane is useful for planing down a board which is too wide
to conventionally rip with a hand saw; this process used to be known
by the term "hogging".
The plane achieves this with the use of the large mouth and the strong
curved blade.
The large mouth allows lots of wood shavings to pass through the mouth
quickly and easily. The 3/16" thick plane blade is ground with a 3 inch
radius to ensure the plane can cope with heavy work.
The Veritas Scrub Plane is also built lightly to make it much easier
to carry out rough planing and for making very heavy cuts without
tiring the user.
Best results can usually be achieved by planing at an angle of at least
30 degrees from the run of the grain.
The Veritas Scrub Plane is Veritas's take of the
Stanley scrub plane 40.
The Veritas Scrub Plane has had the Veritas design comb run over it
giving it a contemporary look with its Bubinga handles and the two-toned
stress-relieved ductile cast iron body.
The plane also has an accurately machined and ground sole, a ductile
cast iron lever cap and a single plane iron which is available in a
choice of materials.
The Veritas Scrub Plane has a choice of being purchased with one of
three plane blade types (check with the retailer to see what is provided
with the Scrub Plane they are retailing):
- High Carbon Steel (HCS)
- A2
- PMV-11
The Veritas Scrub Plane is usually provided in a Veritas cardboard box
with a Veritas picture label showing a photo of the Scrub Plane.
* Important: please refer to the 'disclaimer' at the foot of this review.
* Wearing safety clothing and eye protection is usually a good idea to help protect against injury.
- The blade(s)/cutter(s) is very sharp, take suitable precautions when using/handling/storing
the plane/cutter(s) to prevent injury.
- Failure to loosen parts when making adjustments to the plane can result in damage
to the plane such as cross-threading screw threads. Never force a part to move.
- Overtightening parts can cause damage to the plane and the plane threads.
