Veritas Hinge Mortice Plane Review By: I.Ball
Category: Specialist Planes
Manufacturer: Veritas
Plane Type: Hinge Mortice
Model No: N/A
This Veritas Hinge Mortice Plane review covers the plane made by Veritas
Tools of Canada, this plane is also spelt as Veritas Hinge Mortise Plane.
The Veritas Mortice Plane is a 10 7/8 inch long plane designed for
accurately creating shallow recesses with sharp corners by hand.
The plane is particularly suited to creating mortices for butt hinges,
strike plates and any similar task where a shallow mortice of up to
25mm (1 inch) is required. A good example of when this plane comes
into its own is when creating door hinge recesses.
The plane is well suited to these tasks with its length being able to
span the mortice and with the long open mouth giving a good sized window
to the area being recessed.
This large window opening allows markings to be easily seen and accurately
followed. The mortice plane also has a very good, precise depth adjuster
for accurately setting the cutter to the required depth.
The Veritas mortice plane is equipped with a 3/4" (19mm) wide straight
cutter.
The cutter which is supplied with the mortice plane is the same cutter
which fits the Veritas router. As such any of the Veritas router cutters
fit the Veritas hinge mortice plane.
These cutters include:
3/32" Straight Blade
3/16" Straight Blade
1/4" Straight Blade
1/2" Straight Blade
1/2" Pointed Blade
The cutter is placed in the plane with the stem passing upwards through
the collar and with the bevel side of the cutter facing upwards. Each
cutter has a notch at the top of its stem which locates with the base
of the brass depth adjustment knob.
When passing the cutter through
the stem, ensure the collar is released. The collar has a very useful
spring loaded action to ensure the blade is held in place when the collar
is released.
Once the cutter is in place, ensure the collar is secured by tightening
the collar locking screw.
The plane is also equipped with a depth stop. The depth stop is located
below the brass blade adjuster on the same rod. The depth stop can be
adjusted and set by releasing the small depth stop screw and sliding
the depth stop to the required position and then re-securing the small
depth stop screw.
The cutter can be accurately adjusted by turning the brass depth adjustment
knob. Each turn of the knob moves the cutter upwards or downward 1/32".
The Veritas mortice plane is fitted with a hardwood wooden knob at the
front and rear of the plane offering the user comfort and control when
using the plane as well as giving the plane a fine appearance.
The mortice plane is sold with a cutter sharpening jig. The cutter is
fitted to the sharpening jig by removing the cutter portion of the blade
from the cutter shaft and then attaching the cutter to the jig.
The cutter can then be sharpened with ease without the awkwardness of
the cutter shaft interfering.
The plane is no doubt influenced by the RumBOLD Butt Mortice plane.
The Veritas mortice plane has some very good modifications compared
to the old Rumbold mortice plane.
These differences include:
- The Veritas mortice plane has a fine adjustment depth adjuster
for setting the depth of cut opposed to the manual set of the Rumbold plane.
- The Veritas mortice plane uses an upright router cutter opposed
to the plane cutter used in the Rumbold plane.
- The Veritas mortice plane has available a range of different
sized / profiled cutters opposed to the one standard plane cutter on
the Rumbold plane.
The patented Veritas mortice plane is produced by Veritas Tools Inc.
of Canada.
* Important: please refer to the 'disclaimer' at the foot of this review.
* Wearing safety clothing and eye protection is usually a good idea to help protect against injury.
- The blade(s)/cutter(s) is very sharp, take suitable precautions when using/handling/storing
the plane/cutter(s) to prevent injury.
- Failure to loosen parts when making adjustments to the plane can result in damage
to the plane such as cross-threading screw threads. Never force a part to move.
- Overtightening parts can cause damage to the plane and the plane threads.
