Stanley 1-12-151 Spokeshave Review By: I.Ball

Extra Info: What is a Spokeshave? Spokeshave Videos
Manufacturer: Stanley
Tool Type: Spokeshave
Model No: 151 / 1-12-151
This Stanley 151 Spokeshave review covers the new Stanley flat spokeshave no. 151 / 1-12-151.
If you are looking for info / review on the old 151 spokeshave versions, see the
Old Stanley 151 Spokeshave review.
The new Stanley 151 spokeshave is classed as a fully adjustable spokeshave with its
blade fine adjustment mechanism.
The blade adjustment mechanism consists of two knurled nuts which locate with the top
of each side of the blade. These knurled nuts allow the user to adjust the depth of
cut and give control of raising the cutter slightly higher or lower on either side.
The Stanley 151 has a flat sole used to work flat and convex surfaces.
The Stanley 151 spokeshave blade is placed in the spokeshave with the blades bevel
facing downwards (bevel-down).
A great plus about these spokeshaves are the spare / replacement Stanley 151 spokeshave
blades are readily available and no doubt will be for many years to come.
Stanley offer a round soled version of this spokeshave in the form of the
New Stanley 151 / 1-12-152 Spokeshave - Round
The Stanley 151 spokeshave has a very long history with the core design virtually unchanged
in over 90 years showing the design and value of this tool works very well. Another
testament to the Stanley 151 design is other manufacturers have used the 151 design since
the 1940's and it is still a design used today.
The spokeshave I looked at was a decent continuation of the Stanley 151 spokeshave
timeline for the price, they are cruder than
old Stanley spokeshaves
from what I have observed.
The spokeshave had the most basic of Stanley trade labels,
surely a better trade label design will show customers they are proud of this tool and its
history though maybe a basic trade label fits to a budget spokeshave.
It would also be great to see the cap with the lovely 'Stanley' cap like the
old Stanley spokeshaves
but I appreciate that adds cost which Stanley is trying to compete to keep prices down.
I have read some customer reviews saying things such as they needed to sharpen the
blade,
I have also read a few people reporting needing to sand the back of the cap.
Overall I would say the new Stanley spokeshaves are well priced, decent value for money,
though keep in mind some tuning may be needed including sharpening the blade.
They are a good tool to have in the toolkit when there is a need for shaving and shaping
wood.
If you are looking for a finer, higher-end spokeshave you may want to consider spokeshaves such as
the
Clifton Spokeshaves
and the
Veritas Spokeshaves.
