Extra Info: What is a Tenon Saw? Tenon Saw Videos
Manufacturer: Thomas Flinn & Co.
Tool Type: Tenon Saw
Model No: 1
The Pax tenon saw no.1 review covers the Pax saw made by Thomas Flinn
& Co of Sheffield, England.
The beech handled Pax tenon saw has been a popular, long running
tenon saw which has been produced by Thomas Flinn for a number of
years with a long history of being produced in different forms by different
manufacturers.
The Pax No.1 Tenon Saw is made in the following blade sizes:
- 10 inch
- 12 inch
- 14 inch
The saw has a carbon steel blade with a bright mirror finish.
The 10 Inch blade has a depth of 61mm (2 3/8 inch), the 12 and 14 Inch
blades have a depth of 79mm (3 1/8 inch).
The tenon saws are made with a choice of two teeth type:
The rip teeth are specialised for cutting with the grain and the crosscut teeth
are specialised for cutting across the grain.
These saws have 13 tpi (teeth per inch), with hand sharpened teeth which can be
resharpened again and again for a long life.
The Pax number 1 tenon saw has a stunning etching on the saw blade. The etching
I would say is the best of all the saws produced by Thomas Flinn. Beyond Thomas
Flinn, there are not many saws made today with this detail of etching.
The saw blades have a nice weighted brass back spine which offers extra control,
tension and purchase while offering an added attractive appearance.
The brass backed spine has a beautiful mirrored finish which adds to the beauty
of this saw.
This Pax tenon saw is fitted with an attractive two-tone, steamed beech handle
with gold leaf foliage pattern.
The handle is secured to the blade using three traditional brass split-nut buttons
which sit flush with the handle. One of the buttons has the nice feature of being
faced with an old-style medallion.
Note: Should it be needed at any point, split-nuts require a special split-nut screwdriver
to make adjustments to them (or the very careful use of two small flat-head screwdrivers
at the same time).
The beech handled Pax tenon saw has incorporated many of the best features of some
of the great traditional dovetail saws to create a new quality tenon saw.
This saw will be one which will be wanted to use again and again and will be handed
down to many generations to come.
The Pax tenon saw number 1 is presented in a Pax brown cardboard box with blue writing
on.
