Marples Carving Set Review By: I.Ball
Category: Old Carving Tools
Manufacturer: Marples
Tool Type: Wood Carving Tools
Model No:
William Marples produced a range of wood carving tools
under their 'Shamrock' brand up until 1965 (according to my studies
so far - this date may change as I research further), this set I believe
was only made after 1965 (there are no Shamrock markings). This set was
certainly made by Record Ridgway in the 1970's (the same company which
made the Record planes at the same time and later).
The tools were handled with polished finished hardwood handles; the
wood used was usually mahogany. The Marples brand name was displayed
on the handles.
The handles were finished with brass ferrules.
The blades were forged from the best quality cast steel which were
accurately ground to a good profiled edge.
This range of carving tools were sold individually and in different
sized box sets. The individual tools which were sold were the same tools
as the ones in the box sets only.
This particular set was the 6 piece Marples carving tool box set.
The set consisted of a variety of carving tools including:
1 x 12mm vee tool
1 x 15mm shallow gouge
1 x 13mm deep gouge
1 x 6mm gouge
1 x 11mm curved gouge
1 x 14mm skew chisel
This set was presented in a blue cardboard box with a photo and writing detailing
the core details of the set. The insert of the box is blue.
The tools in this set were full size carving tools.
The full size carving tools are sometimes referred to as the professional range.
The use of the term professional range can be a little misleading, the tools can
be used by beginner or professional, they just have longer blades than the beginner
sets and because of the extra size they were priced at a higher price.
