A Carriage Makers Plane also known as a Bench Rabbet Plane, Coach Makers Plane, Jack Rabbet and a Smooth Rabbet is a woodwork rebate plane which looks like a smoothing plane or jack plane but with the full width blade rebate plane feature.

The carriage makers plane / bench rabbet plane is designed for rebate / rabbet work and panel work, particularly for long rebate / panel work.

The well known old iron carriage maker planes have a 45 degree bed and operate a bevel down blade (like most iron smoothing planes and iron jack planes).

The carriage makers plane blade and cap iron are a special 'T' shape in order to fit into the plane wall openings.

The carriage makers plane is an advancement of the Wooden Badger Plane.

As the name of the plane suggests, it was a tool type well suited to carriage makers / coach makers who worked panels and carriage doors.

In the late 1800's, Stanley began selling their Stanley 10 and Stanley 10 1/2 Carriage Makers Plane which were made for about 100 years.

During this very long production run, other players produced similar versions in the form of the Marples carriage makers plane and the Record 010 and Record 010 1/2 carriage makers planes.
