A Lateral Lever
or Lateral Lever Adjuster
is a mechanism found on some woodwork planes for adjusting the plane blade laterally
(side-to-side).
A lateral lever is a piece of metal which lays behind a plane blade with some sort
of notch which locates with the plane blade.
This mechanism means when the lateral lever is moved sideways then the plane blade
moves sideways, not parallel sideways but on a pivot sideways so the corner and
one side of the plane blade edge will be slightly deeper on one side than the other.
If the lateral lever is left in a central position then the plane edge will be in
a parallel position.
A lateral lever is found on virtually every plane which has a
frog.
A lateral lever adjuster is also found on most
bench planes
and some
infill planes.

"Just stumbled across your website and an absolute treasure trove of information.
I was recently given an old Stanley 110 block plane and wanted to know more about it.
Your website told me everything I needed to know.
But there is so much more to read. I forsee me spending a lot of time just reading
page after page. I can appreciate how much time this will have taken to put together.
I just wanted to let you know that your hard work is appreciated."
